Working Smarter

Of course, you need to learn how to prioritize and plan but still multi-tasking is inevitable when deadlines are one after another.

Somaly Mam and Cambodia's Khmer Rouge regime were born around the same time — when the U.S. began secretly carpet bombing her country. The bombed villages became fertile ground for the Khmer Rouge's growth and Pol Pot's revolution.

By the time Mam was 5, the Khmer Rouge controlled Cambodia and had proceeded to kill 1.5 million people as Pol Pot implemented his radical form of communism. Torture, executions and forced labor were widespread. Families fled for safety, and massive internal displacement decimated Cambodian society in the years that followed.

Against this backdrop, 12-year-old Mam was sold into sexual slavery by a man who posed as her grandfather. She eventually ended up in a Phnom Penh brothel, beginning a decade of horrific rape and torture. She describes this period of her life simply: "I was dead. I had no affection for anyone."

Terror is the weapon of choice for those who hold women in sexual bondage. They depend on their victims' being frozen with fear. Traffickers hope that with enough pain and degradation, women will simply accept their fate as inescapable.

But Mam was able to escape. With the help of an aid worker from France, she fled Cambodia in 1993.

The fact that she escaped makes her unique, but what makes her truly extraordinary is that she went back. While, understandably, most people would spend the rest of their lives quietly recovering from their wounds, Mam decided to confront the system that continues to victimize Cambodian girls.

In 1996, Mam created a nonprofit organization called AFESIP (Agir pour les Femmes en Situation Précaire, or Acting for Women in Distressing Circumstances) that works with local law enforcement to raid brothels and reintegrate the trafficked women into society. It is estimated that between 1.2 million and 2 million people are currently being held as sex slaves around the world. Mam, now 38 or 39 (she does not know her birthday), has established a model for addressing this issue and has already helped more than 4,000 women escape the brothels.

She has paid a terrible personal price for doing so, enduring death threats and assaults. In an effort to deter her work, brothel owners even kidnapped, drugged and raped Mam's then 14-year-old daughter in 2006.

Most people would have walked away. Mam continues to fight back so that others can be spared the pain she once suffered.

Jolie, an Oscar-winning actress, is a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. High Commission for Refugees and co-chair of the Jolie-Pitt Foundation

Gold Medal for Cambodia at the i-SWEEP 2009

Remember my last post about Monika Lavan, the first and only Cambodian student winning a Silver Medal at the I-SWEEEP 2008? It was a great pride for Cambodia. Right now she is studying Industrial Engineering at Louisiana State University (LSU). She's been doing very great so far and guess what she has just recently been elected as a treasurer for an international student community there. I am very proud of her to have done so well in academic life and also being very active in social life and extracurricular activitities.

Well, this year, it is even greater as another bright young Cambodian girl won a Gold Medal at the I-SWEEP 2009. Plus two others won a Bronze and an honorable medal, which lifted Cambodia pride even higher. CONGRATS CONGRATS!!! I am so proud of all of them!!!

I Shouldn't Be Alive: Kidnapin the Killing Fields

I was watching (listening to, actually) TV while browsing internet at the same time and suddenly sth caught my attention to take a glance at the TV screen. Then I saw an ad about this TV series by the Discovery Channel: I Shouldn't Be Alive. It is about Cambodia, the painful history of Cambodia - Khmer Rouge. This week's episode is about a team of foreign volunteers being kidnapped by the Khmer Rouge people. to continue watching here

This is not the first time, that local TV channels in Singapore broadcast shows about Cambodia. I have seen many so far ranging from a sad thing like Khmer Rouge to the great, happy things like food, travel destinations, culture, and so on.

My BD gift and the 3-coin "Good Luck" story

Thanks Pheaktra, Pheak and Vivian for this lovely crystal ball. ^_^ it is so cute. I really love it!

I've just realized today that the 3 coins in the ball is to bring good luck "lots of $$$" hehe.... I happened to know this during my shopping this evening. It was at this shop which sells all the natural/organic products. I bought some massage oil for my uncle and then when i was about to pay, I noticed the shop's owner computer's keyboard was attached with 3 one-dollar coins on the top right corner. I asked him what these three coins were for. He responded that they were for "good luck to the business". Interesting, eh! I normally only see the waving-hand cat to bring good luck and more customers to the business but now I see these 3 coins attached to the computer keyboard!

This has lead me to think of a computer company which can also embed with some of these superstition to help attract customers to buy their products by having a design i.e. 3 coins attached to the keyboard, and market them as to boast the sales to the business! Well it doesn't have to be a computer company or 3 coins though! it can be any business industry or any beliefs depending on the culture.

The key take away here is that it can be a good start to be innovative by starting the thinking around what customers need. This can help them come up with a solution to motivate their small and medium business customers to buy their products/services to help grow the business in a recession time because lately every time i open a new page of news articles or webpages, 9 out of 10 are all related to the downturn of the economy. (just some random thoughts- hope you get what i mean : )

Well after all this won't come without a "COW" meaning hard work :D

My Birthday Cake for this year. BPK = Birthday Phearum and Kalyan. Yes Phearum is a junior student here in Singapore and his bd is 2 days earlier than mine. Our friends here celebrated for both of us yesterday by having a BBQ. Pheara, a sweet lovingly girl, baked this oreo cheese cake for us. I am so touched! ^_^ and believe me it was really really yummy!

I really had a lot of fun. Thanks everyone for celebrating my early birthday :)

Completely Exhausted

Yesterday the Royal Embassy of Cambodia celebrated the "Cambodian National Day". It was a successful event I would say thanks to all the enthusiastic organizers - the cambodian students in Singapore and a few working persons like me :-)

I was proud to present myself with the traditional costume and telling people about it. I was able to mingle around with all the diplomats, government officials and other important figures from different sectors in Singapore. I think I have recieved about 10 business cards now :)

The best moment was when people danced. It was awesome and we also taught those guests to dance, too. They really enjoyed it a lot.

At the end of the night, my feet were so painful cos of the unconfortable high heels. I do wear high heels every day to work yet not as high and probably because of the shoes' design that discomforted my whole feet.

Back home, I just slept like a dead person and waking in the morning I could barely find my strength to get out of the bed. The feeling was totally like a hang over from a heavy drinking the night before. Well at least I didn't get black out. I thought I may ask for a sick leave yet I decided not to. Instead of taking a bus as regularly, I took a cab to work. The taxi driver took me to somewhere further than my workplace and then he said he confused the way. How funny that was!!!! I never expected a taxi driver know nothing where Park Mall is! I guess he tried to cheat me seeing my vulnerability and my foreign accent! Geez!!! I hate it!!! So the charge ended up $18 plus which I normally paid only about $7 max from my house to my workplace. However, he knew that it was his mistake that he made the journey longer than it should be, so he charged me only $12. Ok, I had no comment since I could barely speak. I was just too tired.

WORK WORK WORK... It was a busy day. FInally I got home and fell on my bed again till 9pm. Now I don't know where my total energy has gone to; all I know is I am completely exhausted STILL.

Independence Day and Water Festival

It's a holiday in Cambodia. My big brother is arriving in PP tmr. Why am I still here all alone? :-(

Anyway, Happy Independence Day and Water Festival to everyone. Here we are going to have a National Day celebration on Monday. I will be participating and walking on the stage in a traditional costume. The thing is I work on the day and I have to leave work a bit early and rush to the venue so that I can have enough time to dress up and get ready for the event. I will not be able to make it for the final rehearsal on the stage itself. Ah.... I am keeping my finger crossed now that I am not going to fall on the stage lolz...

What else? I am going to visit home on 22 Nov. I can't wait!!!! It's like one arrow can kill many birds. I will be able to see my big brother which I haven't seen him for ages. I will be joining my cousin's wedding, too. Most important of all is to see my parents, my bro n sis and yah my lovely niece and nephew. I miss them so much, and finally my beloved one :)

Weekend? Today I planned many things but I ended doing only 2 things out of the 10 things I planned, which is normal lolz.. I actually wasted too much time doing nothing. I supposed to go jogging and swimming, but I ended up eating and watching movie only. I watched Quantum of Solace. It was pretty good and yah cos I was sitting all alone without knowing anyone surrounding me. ah too bad but I enjoyed the movie though. Actually, my colleague was sitting at the next row. We booked the ticket at different times, so yah and she also got her friends. I asked many of my friends but none of them are interested, they instead went for Madagasca haha.. Ok fine!!

anyway too much writing for me tonight, which is not normal and I do sound messed up here cos I talk this and that all over the place. My head is gonna knock me down if I am not sleeping now. So GOodnight :-)

Such a Day!

Today I had an active day! Early in the morning I drove my mum to the market then I had breakfast with Pheap. It was so nice to see you again after a year. You look pretty and cute and of course very cheering :D. I really enjoyed chatting with you and thanks for your treat ;-)

Then I came back home and did all my laundry. A bit later my cousin asked me to hang out with her. So yeah I decided to drive around with her. I was the driver :( the terrible part when i had to drive a long the worst road ever in Steung Mean Chey area. The main road was closed so they had a detour which had a lot of holes and mud. I really had a hard time driving along that tiny, muddy and bumpy detour. Finally, I managed to get out. We were all so hungry even though we had Chek Ang (Grilled Bananas) earlier in the morning. Those grilled bananas were sooooooooooooo yummy!!! We wish we had bought more hehehe.. So yeah we decided to have lunch at a Khmer-Thai restaurant near Toul Tom Poung Market or Russian Market ( I never knew that there is another KT near my house. I only used to go to the one near Olympic market). Here are the dishes we ordered.

Nhuam Kanh Chet with Sach Kor (forgot the English name for KanhChet) but yeah for those who can't read, it's a salad with green vegies and beef.

Pad Thai.. Hmm.. not really nice!! I think I had the best Pad Thai when i was in LA at Noodle World!

After lunch, we went shopping. I bought so many stuffs and they were pretty cheap and nice! I really love all those I bought :D I haven't done such shopping for ages. lolz

Later I came back I had to finish my laundry and put away the dry clothes and arrange my bed and pillow sheets. i was so exhausted and somehow shimmering. I guess i had two glasses of coffee today after a week with no coffee. I am now trying to reduce my cafeine :D

Hmm.. What's next? yeah of course as usual I went to the gym and swimming. I felt really good after exercising. Spontaneously, I, Leeda and Nak left the gym and went to have dinner with Phors, Neak Bong and her friend. ^_^ I know you are longing for photos right Phossdey? :p they are all in Neak Bong and Phors's cameras. SO yeah ask from them!!!

I left the dining table early since I had to rush home. It was nearly 9pm already. I can't get back home later than that. T_T So yah thanks neak bong for the treat!

Today I got treated for all my 3 meals hahahaha what a lucky day! :p

How spectacular this fall is! I wish I were there! Well, at least I have seen the picture. lolz.. This fall is located about 20 km from Pich Nil on the way to Sihanouk Ville. It hasn't been very popular yet, so it is very remoted and you need a big group of people to explore the area. It's very good for a quick get away from the city especially for hiking or jus simply sightseeing!

A lot of my viewers have asked me why lately I am very slow in updating my blog. Well, the thing is I blog when I am stressed out from school and since now I have no more school, I am just relaxing and having fun these days. lolz...

So once I start working and get back to my busy life, I will keep blogging more often again ;-)

Lately, I just hang around, eat, sleep, do some work (small biz) and yeah have some fun and go to the gym. Talking about this, I went to the gym twice today! In the morning, i worked out and in the evening I went swimming! It was so cool eh? lolz.. Now I felt pain all over my body, including from the massage I had the night before because I was having a bad headache! However, I had a nice treat at a bar lounge in Phnom Penh Hotel. It was cool and a lot of fun! Thanks Bong Cheat for the yummy chocolate! and Thanks Tin for the treat! it was very nice of u and leeda is gonna be so poor after marriage hhahhaha :p

Tmr I am planning to cook at my friend's house. I haven't cooked since I came back, let's see if my food is gonna be testy! lolz... I am thinking of making Sushi, wat do u think? yah cos Monika, who I used to write a post about when she won a silver medal for a science competition, asked me to make her Sushi as a present for her success. One more thing! I have been asked where I have been since I came back. Er... I have no idea! I guess the furthest i have gone to is Toul Kork or Wat Phnom. lolz.. I know I should have gone further to the provinces or to the beach. I was planning to go to Prey Veng for a Youth Festival with my friends and some bloggers, but I couldn't. I had to be in town for some reason. My friend is leaving for the US and yeah I have to join his farewell dinner. And I have some work to do as tmr I am meeting with my friend for some business and sorting out before I leave.

there are so many things and so many plans for me to do before the end of the month but I just don't know if I can keep all those plans active. lolz..

Junior High Examination

A few days ago, there was an examination for Junior High students. The road in front of my house was blocked for security purpose - that is to prevent people from driving pass by which could disturb the students and also (I guess) to prevent people from throwing exam solutions to the students through the windows lolz. Even the newsstands were also closed. I was not able to buy the paper that day.

People were not allowed to drive along the road as students were still taking exam. But i could go through as my house is in there. I was standing from my house's balcony and took this pic. The people you see here are the family of the students. They were waiting for them to come out of the exam rooms (with hope) :-)

Driving in PP

I thought it would take me at least a few weeks to be able to drive in Phnom Penh once again. Surprisingly, the day after I arrived, I managed to drive with no difficulty in such crowded traffic. Yes, the traffic is currently getting worse as there are more vehicles on the streets and some do not respect the traffic law at all. I have noticed some improvement in terms of an increase in the number of traffic lights and signs, yet some commuters seem to ignore those. There are also a lot of constructions around the city. I haven't actually driven around the city to see what have been changed over the past year. Last week, I went to the new shopping mall, Sovanna. I was amazed by the surrounding buildings and yeah I saw a lot of brand names such as KFC, Swensens, etc. I have not yet taken any photos of the city yet. I will take the photos later and post them to show those who eager to see how Phnom Penh is like now.

Is it a popular name? There is Metro in Syracuse and surprisingly I have found another Metro in Phnom Penh! Isn't it cool? hehehe..

It's been a while since I arrived in PP. I feel so warm being back home. Of course, the weather is definitely "warm" but what I mean by "warm" is to be back with my family and to have fun with my friends. I still do miss my friends back in the States. I did enjoy my 13 months over there. Well, so now you all know where I am and you are welcome to visit me here in PP any time ^_^

I was supposed to go to Shanghai yet the flight has been canceled and thus I have to change to transit in Singapore (again) lolz.. I guess I am destined to be back there ^_^ Too bad I don't have enough time to stay there for a few days since I need to rush back home.

Some updates about me: now I am in LA. It's super hot in here yet I am having a lot of fun. My skin got so dark now. There are nice places and good food, so expect to see a piggy lady back home :-@

Rain

It's been raining a lot lately. I personally do not like it so much when it rains because it is very hard to go out and it's gloomy and depressing, and even worse if there are thunderstorms. Some people think that the sound of the rain dropping is the best part as it is like a rhythm of music, and it is specially romantic if a couple walk hand in hand under the rain. However, I still prefer a sunny day with a blue sky.

Today, I and my housemates had a BBQ. While we were enjoying grilling, eating and talking, the rain came. It was supposed to be a sunny day with no rain based on the weather forecast!!! How come it rained? This is Syracuse - very unpredictable weather! So, we suddenly rushed to move all the stuffs inside the house. A while later, the rain stopped and the sun came back to shine brightly. We then decided to go for a walk around the rose garden and the park near our house. We were taking photos and playing Frisbee. It was so much fun until the rain came again. So we had to run back home! However, we couldn't make it and we were pretty wet by the time we reached home. Thus, we decided to play Softball at the backyard of the house. It was not too bad to play under the rain after all (because there were no lightnings nor thunderstorms) ^_^

Many of you may wonder why I rarely write lately and why I suddenly become so into photography? I really have no idea! lolz...

Actually, lately I have nothing much to write or probably I am already sick of writing after my capstone project. ^_^ There is nothing much to update beside the fact that I have only 2 weeks left until my real graduation. Yay! Right now I am taking my last summer course, Executive Leadership. It's a very interesting course and it is a good way to pace down after all the intensive 11 month studies with very short breaks in between. Some may have already been burned out while I was almost yet luckily the last week I have been enjoying and regaining my energy and fun. I am not sure whether I have totally regained my energy because since the last time I played soft ball, my arm is now still aching. Ouch!!! But I am doing fine.

So what's next? I am going to reward myself after this hard year with a bit of traveling here before I return home. I will start from Seattle then going down to Los Angeles, continuing to Las Vegas and then San Diego. I may probably visit San Francisco if my friends will be there by then. Next I am going to visit my best friend in Florida. Finally, back to Syracuse then home sweet home ^_^
